Flight Details?

We are all flying together with Aer Lingus on the same flight, direct to Hungary. The flight will take just under 3 hours, and the departure and arrival times are as follows:

DateDepartArrive
Wednesday September 8 Dublin 15:45 Budapest 19:40
Monday September 13 Budapest 20:35 Dublin 22:40

Some Important Notes
  • Baggage booked will be one suitcase per person - if you feel you need less, please contact Karl, as there is a charge for every bag.
  • Competitors will also have a bike box booked on the flight - this should contain only your bike as it will be weighed (ignore previous advice about putting other items in there), and you will be charged for excess weight. Keep wetsuit, helmet, etc in your normal suitcase.
  • We have not bought travel insurance for anyone - this is your responsibility, and you are advised to arrange your own.
  • Anyone travelling to race will need to obtain a Bike Box; these can be bought at Wheelworx or Cycle Superstore or online, can be rented by the week through Wheelworx or Cycle Superstore, or you might just be able to convince someone in the club not going to lend you theirs!

We will let you know of arrangements for travel to the airport closer to the time, given the flight time of 3:45pm, we'd need to be in the airport by 1:30pm, and so meet together in Portlaoise around 11:00am.

Accomodation Details?

We will be staying in 'Mavericks Hostel', one of Budapests newest and brightest hostels. It has consistently achieved over 90% satisfaction rating from people who have stayed there and booked through Hostelworld.

We have the hostel practically booked out, all beds in all rooms bar two are taken, which hopefully means we have no late night disturbances, etc before the race, and perhaps a bit safer too.

Click here to visit the webpage for Mavericks where you can read the reviews, watch a video, see more pictures, etc.

Getting your bike to Budapest?

We are very fortunate that Brian Bonham has been able to help us get our bikes on the Aer Lingus flight. Before we even booked, their 6 allocated bike spots were gone, but Brian has managed to get us on board nonetheless. So bikes travel with you. There will be a meeting held close to the time of the race to box our bikes, all under the watchful eye of Team Mechanic Murt Keane.

Your bike needs to be in perfect working order before it is boxed, Murt is coming along to make sure it survives the travel, a full bike service is not part of the deal!

What does the Support team do?

There are three people looking after the trip organisation.

Karl McCann is Travel Manager, and is responsible for flights, accomodation and race entry fees.

Roy Atkinson is Team Manager, and will look after you from the time we leave Portlaoise until we get back again. Roy will hold a briefing in the hostel each morning to remind all competeitors of registration, practice events, etc, plus any updates on racing times; light training sessions for the group can also be arranged through Roy. Roy will also co-ordinate the wave starts on race day. Part of Roy's job will be to also advise competitors and supporters on places to see, how to get there, etc, and will deal with any accomodation queries once we get to Budapest.

As Team mechanic, Murt Keane will provide competitors with advice on packing and unpacking their bikes for air travel, assist with assembly in Budapest, fine tune gears, brakes, etc before the race starts and give your bike the once over on race day.

***** NEWS UPDATE 30 January 2010 *****

I am organising a Budapest meeting for Weds 10 February. The purpose of the meeting is to confirm final numbers for the trip and to take any questions people have.

A couple of important notes

  1. I need a photo copy of your passport and of any one travelling with you. This is to allow me book flights for you.
  2. You will get a text over the coming days with the amount we have from you so far and the amount you have to pay (see below). This update will also be there on the night.
  3. Everybody will need to have paid at least the following amounts, so you may need to bring along a cheque to bring your amount up to date.
    • Adults - €100 plus €80 commitment fee = €180 (balance of €140 to be paid €20 per month February to September 2010)
    • Juniors + 1 Adult - €150 plus €120 commitment fee = €270 (balance of €210 to be paid €30 per month February to September 2010)
    • Juniors + 2 Adults - €250 plus €200 commitment fee - €450 (balance of €350 to be paid €50 per month February to September 2010)
  4. I will discuss the options to pay the balance between now and the trip
  5. If you haven't yet signed up, this meeting is the very last opportunity to join the Trilogy scheme. You will need to either pay in full or up to the amount listed above under 3. Please note - if you haven't applied to TI yet, there is still some time to do this too.
  6. If you can't make the meeting, please arrange for someone to bring a copy of your passport plus any payment for you.
The meeting will take place at 7:30 and be finished in time for the usual spinning session. The venue is the Portlaoise Leisure Centre in the room across from the spinning studio.

Triathlon - your Sport. Ireland - Your Country. You - racing for Ireland at the World Age Group Championships 2010.

Sounds Good?
The World Age Group Championships is the pinnacle of our sport, the highest field of play an amateur triathlete can strive for, its the Olympics, the World Cup, Wimbledon and the Tour de France. And it's your opportunity to miss.

In 2010, the World Champs vist Budapest, Hungary. 4,000 triathletes from all over the world will gather to race in the Age-Group event from Juniors right up to 80+. On the same course they will be joined by over 200 Elite atheltes, all chasing points for Olympic qualification in London 2012. It is going to be the biggest Wolrd Championships the World has seen.

And of course, Trilogy are planning to be there and to be there with a full team ready to race. This is your opportunity to make the Irish team.

What the World Championships are about

The World Championships is the flagship triathlon event of each triathlon season. The event is organised by a local committee following very strict rules set down by the International Triathlon Union. Venues are awarded the championships much like the way Olympics or world Cups are awarded, with host venues bidding against each other for the honour of holding them. As a participant you can expect an accurate course, huge support on the streets, a grandstand finish and a huge festival / party celcebration. You will also be part of Team Ireland, wearing national kit and mixing it with teams from right across the world.

The programme is not finalised as yet, but there will definitely be an Olympic distance race. Its also very likely to have a Sprint race, along with a new 'Team Relay' event where 4 members (2 male, 2 female) race a test-tri length event before passing to the next team member and so on. You may also be able to race the World Aquathon Championships a couple of days before the race.

How you can qualify

The first step is decide that you want to go and sign-up. There are several ways to qualify, and the club will give individual advice to everyone wanting to travel and race. Qualification is achieveable for everyone - just look to Lisbon, the last time the club went to a championship race - every applicant qualified. So put your name down!

The actual qualification process is much the same as for Athlone 2010 (The European Championships). First things first - the international rules state that you must be an Irish citizen to race for Ireland; that means an Irish Birth cert or Passport. If you are entitled to one of these but don't have it yet, then you should apply early as experience tells it takes a really long time to process.

Secondly, you must be a full member of Triathlon Ireland for 2009 (most of you are) to qualify , and you must be a full member for 2010 also to race.

Finally, you need to be selected. The good news is that many of you chasing places in Athlone will already be doing enough to qualify for the Worlds. The way the championships work is that Ireland are allocated 20 places per age group. For most age groups, this means there is more places than candicates, so all applicants get chosen. TO be an applicant you must first have raced a selection race or gained national series points.

What if I don't Qualify? What if I am not Irish?

If you don't qualify to race (say, for example you don't have an Irish passport), or if you fail to be selected for the World Championships, there will be an 'all-comers' race, usually on the same course the day before or after the World Champs. As a club member you will travel on exactly the same terms as other members but in place of the Worlds race, you can take part in the all-comers event.

How much the trip will cost

Travelling to compete at the World Champs involves a number of expenses - your flight, the carriage of your bike, accomodation for 5 nights close to the race, the race entry fee and an management fee payable to TI. A quick estimate on these costs comes to around €550. The club is planning to subsidise the trip so that the cost to members is no more than €320.

That's right, the cost to members is just €320. The rest of the cost is paid for by your club.

The club proposes that members and guests coming to Hungary set up a monthly payment to us of €20.00 each from 20 September 2009 to 20 August 2010 (total of 12 payments). In addition, a €80.00 commitment fee will be payable in February 2010 - that is the time the club will be paying non-refundable items like flights and race fees.

The other major cost of entry is an Ireland Team Kit - which you must race in. Club kit, or other kit is not allowed. You must also arrange to have your surname printed on the backside of the kit. The cost of kit and printing will be around €130; if you have raced for Ireland before, or intend racing in Athlone, you will have this kit already.

Please note: Until you pay the commitment fee of €80 in February 2010, all monies are 100% refundable. After that time, full refunds are not possible as money will have been spent on non-refundable items (we will refund you what we can).

Bringing guests and supporters

Guests and supporters are more that welcome on the trip, and they pay the exact same way as racing members.

What about Juniors?

The ITU will always specify a Junior only race, probably sprint distance. Juniors will be able to travel, but Trilogy will insist that any Junior member is accompanied by at least one parent / Guardian. Rates for Junior packages will be €30 per month and €120 commitment fee for a 1 Parent / 1 Junior package (€50 / €200 if two parents travelling).

Accomodation Details

Accomodation has not yet been booked, but it will be styled on the Lisbon model - i.e. high quality shared accomodation close to the race start, with room for bikes, etc. Accomodation is on a shared basis, and will be self-catering.
