Preview of the 2010 Series of Test DuathlonsThe 2010 round of test duathlons are underway. Like the Test Triathlon series, there are six of these scheduled over the 2010 season.

For the many new members of the club planning to take part, here are a few of your frequently asked questions answered.

What A Test Duathlon Is

Test Duathlon is a training session that works as a three-part race simulation. The format is run / cycle / run. The run sections are 1.8km each, with the bike a tad under 15km (3 laps of 4.85km).

Each person begins at one minute intervals, just like a time trial race in cycling. Why do we do it?

We do it for two reasons - benchmarking and race simulation.

  • Benchmarking - Test Duathlons always follow the same format, and the same route, every time since they started back in 2006. They happen once every few weeks from April until August or so, and during these times you can quickly benchmark how you are doing month to month and season to season.
  • Race Simulation - The event is timed, is run according to TI rules, and you are encouraged to run / cycle at race pace. The distances are short so that you can train intensely / at race pace. The format is also time-trial, reflecting the individiual nature of both triathlon and duathlon. Finally, the races provide an excellent way to practice and perfect transition.
Will I get results?

Directly after the race you will get a full split time for both runs, both transitions and each lap of the cycle, as well as an overall placing. You can use this information to see where you did well, where you can improve, and who you need to watch over your shoulder for next time! Results will be provided tomorrow 1 hour after the final finisher at the Streat cafe, near the new Superquinn.

How do I earn points?

Points are given for the four 'P's - Participation and Marshalling (50 points per appearance, plus 100 points if you help out at one event, max 350 points, but only if you help out), Personal Best (50 bonus points every time you set a new PB), Placings (bonus points if you set the 1st, 2nd or 3rd best times in any leg or overall) and Position (points based on your time versus the winning time on the day). See Guide to Ranking Points for more info.

Rules and Entry:

Like all training sessions, members must be registered with TI for insurance reasons. If you are not registered, please understand that we cannot let you take part.

Once you start the test duathlon, you are subject to normal TI rules. The most important of these are helmet offences (no helmet, no race), drafting (disallowed, time penalties apply), cheating, and disobeying the rules of the road or any of our marshals.

What time does the duathlon start and where do we meet?
  • Test Duathlons are organised and based from outside the Chuch on the Heath. Registration is from 6:30pm, with a race briefing at 7:10pm and a start of 7:30pm latest. These times are often adjusted depending on the length of day and expected field to ensure we all get home before dark. Keep an eye on the News page for updates
  • If you are new to the course, it is a good idea to attend one of the brick training sessions, where you can be taken through the course.
  • When we start, participants are sent off at 1-minute intervals. You will be given a number that corresponds to your start time (1 goes first, then 2, etc).
  • At each of the timing points you are asked to shout your number, this helps our helpers get your time splits right (if manual timing).
  • if we are using the watch system for recording your own times, you will be responsible for using the watch correctly, and a short demo will be given before the start.
  • Results will be available online by the following morning (often they appear around 10:00pm).
