Marshall Law was declared in Lough Key with Cornelius clocking a savage 16:38 for a 5K run coming 3rd fastest runner, just 1 minute behind Gavin Noble in the running section. Both Patrick and Cornelius had much improved swims and showed a huge surge in form late in the season. Both will be contesting for honours in 2011 no doubt.
My own form wasn't too bad, a little slower than last year but still respectable enough. The quality of the field was much higher than last year because it was a Triathlon Ireland Ranking Race (and National Championships) and we took no prizes this year.
It had a clean 750 metre lake swim, 23K on the bike which had quite a few hills and a lovely flat 5K forest run to finish it off.
Gavin Noble just held off Conor Murphy after falling off his bike in the first 100 metres to finish in 63 minutes. I must admit, Gavin Nobel is one hell of a nice guy. From chatting to him, it turns out he was a young kid on the beach in Rosses Point giving out Mars bars at the Sligo Half Ironman races back over 20 years ago in the late eighties. Both Stevie O'Toole and myself were racing in those fledgling endurance races in Sligo at that time. It was there the young Gavin first saw triathlons and the rest is history!
Susan Wall swam very well and put in a strong performance with a solid finish. Roy improved by 4 minutes on last year and his efforts on new bike is paying off. Mary Fingleton had a tough swim but she kept it going and swam all the way, no stopping this time ! Mary was very pleased with her performance indeed.
Overall a good day indeed, well run, nice location, less than 2 hours drive from Portlaoise, lovely T-shirts, and I hope to be back again next year. |
